I would love to see more apps use these solutions and pay more attention to KYC data and the onboarding process, If you’re designing an app and feel the need to use these solutions you’ll notice better conversions.
"Allow “Flint” to access your location while you are using the app?"
You have certainly seen that message pop up whenever you install a new location based app on your mobile phone, and if you haven’t where have you been ?
When apps aren’t asking for location permissions, they’re asking to have access to your storage or camera. We live in an increasingly security conscious world where data reigns supreme and whoever controls it controls the world. Yet it appears that apps haven’t figured out how to ask for user permissions without triggering doubt.
Walking the Privacy Plank 🏴☠️🦜
Apps like Uber, Quatro or Jumia foods need to be able to connect to collect your Positioning data in order to geo-locate users using GPS systems which makes it easier for these services to serve user needs. However, a large number of people do not feel secure with sharing such private information with a developer somewhere in Ikeja.
This presents a UX problem for the user where their experience using the product is hampered because they don’t trust the platform enough to share their data — privacy and data protection is a much hotter topic in 2021 and now more than ever the user’s experience should be optimized to put their privacy concerns at ease when using a product.
Gathering Data 📊📉
This past week I created a Twitter poll to get an idea of what people think about allowing an app turn on their location (results are below). The question was simple and i provided an extra option for those who are indifferent about sharing their data.
The result above shows that an overwhelming 69.5% of the people who voted on this poll are bothered about sharing their location information, while 18.6% are indifferent. The rest are the type who will click “allow” 100% of the time.
A UX Solution ✨
Knowing that most platforms do not care about proper user onboarding or how to design better experiences to avoid user drop off ensuing from a lack of trust from the user to the product, I have come up with a solution to permission requests in the product experience.
Prime users to make them intentionally & consciously permit data usage by telling them what you need their data for (When actions are driven by user intent, the experience on the user’s side feels more natural; hence, the better conversion).
Delay requests for permission. Some apps hit you with several permission requests at the same time causing an overload of information for the user. Maybe wait till checkout to request location access than ask for it at the beginning.
Remove unnecessary permissions (goes without saying that if your app doesn’t need my camera, don’t ask for camera permissions)
Ask every time it is needed. (this might be unpopular, but if the user knows that they’re granting permission as a one-time event, they will feel more at ease using your product)
I would love to see more apps use these solutions and pay more attention to KYC data and the onboarding process, If you’re designing an app and feel the need to use these solutions you’ll notice better conversions.
